The ancient Romans celebrated a festival called ‘Parentalia’ in February, which was dedicated to honouring deceased ancestors, including fathers. The Birth of Father's Day

Fast forward to the early 20th century, and we find ourselves in the United States. The story of Father's Day as we know it today begins here. It was Sonora Smart Dodd, inspired by the success of Mother's Day, who championed the idea of a day dedicated to fathers. She sought to honour her own father, William Jackson Smart, a widowed Civil War veteran who raised six children single-handedly.

Sonora Dodd's vision for Father's Day began to gain traction. In 1910, the Spokane Ministerial Association and the local YMCA came together to celebrate the first official Father's Day on June 19th, coinciding with William Jackson Smart's birthday. Finally, in 1972, Father's Day was officially recognised as a national holiday in the United States, signed into law by President Richard Nixon.
