The day that celebrates even bad dad jokes is just around the corner. Yes, you must have guessed by now that we are talking about Father’s Day. Every year, we set aside a special day (the third Sunday of June) to honour and appreciate the real-life superhero. This is the ideal time to express our gratitude for their love, support and guidance. But have you ever wondered about the origins of this cherished occasion? Let's take a journey through time and explore the fascinating history of Father's Day.
Diving Deep into the History
The idea of honouring fathers can be traced back to ancient civilisations. The ancient Romans celebrated a festival called ‘Parentalia’ in February, which was dedicated to honouring deceased ancestors, including fathers. Similarly, the ancient Greeks paid tribute to their gods and fathers in a festival known as ‘Cronia.’
The Birth of Father's Day
Fast forward to the early 20th century, and we find ourselves in the United States. The story of Father's Day as we know it today begins here. It was Sonora Smart Dodd, inspired by the success of Mother's Day, who championed the idea of a day dedicated to fathers. She sought to honour her own father, William Jackson Smart, a widowed Civil War veteran who raised six children single-handedly.
Recognition and National Holiday
Sonora Dodd's vision for Father's Day began to gain traction. In 1910, the Spokane Ministerial Association and the local YMCA came together to celebrate the first official Father's Day on June 19th, coinciding with William Jackson Smart's birthday. Over time, the significance of this day spread throughout the United States. Finally, in 1972, Father's Day was officially recognised as a national holiday in the United States, signed into law by President Richard Nixon.
Global Customs & Traditions
Father's Day transcends borders, with countries around the world embracing this special occasion in their own unique ways. In Germany, fathers receive a Father's Day wagon filled with delectable food and beverages, setting the stage for a day of hiking and bonding. In Thailand, Father's Day coincides with the birthday of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, a revered figure, and families come together to express their deep gratitude. In India, children take their dads for an outing, spend quality time and surprise them with thoughtful Father's Day gifts.
Significance of Father's Day
Father's Day holds immense significance beyond a mere calendar event. It serves as a reminder of the essential role dads play in our lives. They are not just providers but also mentors, teachers, and friends who shape our values, instil discipline and offer unwavering support when we need it most. One should utilise the occasion to the fullest to express their love and appreciation for the sacrifices and selflessness he demonstrates every day.
