About Republic Day
The Republic Day marks the date when the Constitution of India came into force on 26th January 1950. 26th January was specially chosen as the Republic Day because it was on this day in the year 1930 when Indian National Congress proclaimed the declaration of Indian Independence. On 26th January 1950, India was declared as a democratic republic nation and Dr. Rajendra Prasad was elected as the first president of India. This year, India will celebrate its 70th Republic Day, a day of pride for all its citizens.
Republic Day is celebrated with great enthusiasm and pride throughout India. Several events are organized every year in schools, colleges, and other government institutions. The president hoists the Indian flag to the sounds of the National Anthem sharp at 9 am. After which a grand parade is held in New Delhi that starts from the Raisina Hill near the Rashtrapati Bhawan and goes on to the Red Fort. The regiments of the Indian Army, Navy & Air Force also participate in the parade and march past in all their finery and official decorations. The President of India who is the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Armed Forces takes the salute. Bravery awards and medals are given to the people from the armed forces and civilians for their exemplary work and performances. In addition, several traditional singing and dancing performances are given by school children that make this occasion all the more colorful. During the parade, the armed force personnel also showcase their motorcycle rides. The parade ends with a fly parade by the Indian Air Force that leaves behind the trails of smoke in the colors of the Indian flag. The Beating Retreat Ceremony is held the third day after the Republic Day that marks the end of festivities. It is performed by the bands of the Indian Army, Navy & Air Force.
Why Do We Celebrate?
The Republic Day is celebrated every year to make Indians proud for taking birth in a diverse country where people of different religions live together with love and harmony. This Day instills the feeling of pride among citizens as well as the love and respect for their country. On Republic Day, Indians proudly hoist the National tricolor flag. They sing patriotic songs such as Vande Mataram, Aye Mere Watan Ke Logon, etc. to pay tribute to all the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of the nation.
